Individualized Support for Meaningful Growth

Meet Our Director of Residential Autism Services, Eric Feitl

Eric Feitl, MA, BCBA, COBA, is the Director of Residential Autism Services for the Monarch Center for Autism. He oversees both the QRTP and PRTF programs on Bellefaire’s Shaker Heights campus. Since joining Bellefaire affiliate Monarch Lifeworks in 2018, Eric has advanced from a Treatment Specialist to Clinical Coordinator, transitioning to his current role at the Monarch Center for Autism in 2023. He specializes in evidence-based treatment for youth and adults with ASD, intellectual disabilities, and co-occurring mental health diagnoses. Eric focuses on reducing severe challenging behavior by teaching functional communication, daily living independence, and coping skills, while actively training families and professionals.

Autism Residential Treatment Programs

The Monarch Center for Autism at Bellefaire JCB provides comprehensive autism education, treatment, and support guided by the Monarch Model, an evidence-informed approach developed in partnership with Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. The Model brings together individualized programming, visual language immersion, structured and supportive environments, interdisciplinary collaboration, active family engagement, visual and regulation supports, technology, and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help individuals with autism strengthen communication, learning, social-emotional skills, self-regulation, and independence.

Located on Bellefaire JCB’s 32-acre campus in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Monarch Residential Autism Services provides individualized residential treatment for children and young people with autism and, in some programs, co-occurring behavioral health or intellectual and developmental needs. Across three closely affiliated programs, residents receive the structure, clinical support, education, and opportunities to build skills in communication, sensory and emotional regulation, executive functioning, and daily living. Coordinated physical and dental care on campus further supports each resident’s health and well-being.

Building Skills Through ABA

While Monarch Residential Autism Services is grounded in the Monarch Model, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) plays a central role in the residential experience. ABA strategies are woven into daily routines and interactions to help residents learn, practice, and generalize skills in the places where they live, learn, and spend time.

Staff use individualized goals, positive reinforcement, prompting, and other ABA-based strategies to support communication, self-regulation, social skills, daily living, and independence. This consistent approach gives residents repeated opportunities to practice skills in real-life situations and build greater confidence and independence over time.

Program Features & FAQS

Our residential team provides around-the-clock support in a structured, therapeutic environment designed to foster independence, skill development, and overall well-being. A team of professionals works collaboratively across residential, clinical, behavioral, and educational settings to provide consistent, individualized support throughout each resident’s day.

The residential team includes:

  • Program Leadership — The Director, Program Managers, and Staff Development Coordinator provide program oversight, support quality and consistency, and ensure staff have the training and resources they need to meet residents’ individual needs.
  • Floor Supervisors — Provide leadership and supervision within the residential setting and help ensure consistent implementation of each resident’s individualized supports.
  • Autism Treatment Specialists — Work directly with residents throughout the day, helping them practice communication, social, behavioral, and daily living skills and supporting their progress toward greater independence.

Residential programming typically maintains a 2:1 staffing ratio, with two residents to one staff member. Because staff work as a team, additional support can be provided when a resident needs more individualized assistance, including 1:1 support during periods of difficulty or escalation.

All Monarch Center for Autism staff receive training in Safety-Care®, along with training specific to the needs of the residents they support. Ongoing professional development helps staff use proactive, positive approaches to support communication, regulation, skill development, and safety

 Meet Our Team

Every resident begins with a comprehensive assessment to better understand their strengths, needs, abilities, and areas for growth. Assessments are completed across both residential and educational settings and help the team develop an individualized plan that guides treatment, education, and skill development.

Each resident’s Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP) and Individualized Education Plan/Service Plan (IEP/SP) establish meaningful goals and identify the supports and strategies needed to achieve them. Plans are reviewed and adjusted as residents grow and their needs change, ensuring that programming remains individualized and focused on meaningful progress.

Assessment and Individualized Planning FAQs

We help residents develop effective ways to communicate their needs, understand their environment, and manage emotions and sensory experiences. Individualized supports are built into daily routines to help residents feel more regulated, communicate more effectively, and participate more successfully at home, at school, and in the community.

  • Sensory regulation supports and coping strategies help residents recognize and manage sensory and emotional needs.
  • Visual supports are used to make instruction, organization, communication, and transitions more predictable and understandable.
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), including Speech Generating Devices (SGDs), provides individualized ways for residents to express themselves when spoken communication is difficult or not their primary mode of communication.

Communication and Self-Regulation FAQs

Residents have frequent opportunities to learn, practice, and generalize skills that support greater independence and meaningful participation in everyday life. Programming uses individualized, evidence-informed strategies to build on each resident’s strengths and help them experience success across settings.

  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies are incorporated to teach, practice, and reinforce new skills and support positive behavior.
  • Social skills instruction helps residents strengthen communication, collaboration, friendship, perspective-taking, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Fine and gross motor activities support coordination, mobility, physical wellness, and participation in everyday activities.

The goal is not simply to learn a skill, but to help residents use what they learn in real-life situations with increasing confidence and independence.

Skill Development FAQs

Everyday activities and routines provide meaningful opportunities for residents to build confidence and become more independent. Treatment Specialists and Supervisors provide individualized support, encouraging residents to organize skills into manageable steps that increases daily routine participation. Opportunities often are provided for residents to generalize skills to real-life situations.

  • Personal hygiene and self-care
  • Laundry and household routines
  • Cooking, meal preparation, and nutrition
  • Money management and financial skills
  • Leisure, recreation, and community participation
  • First aid and personal safety

Families are an important part of each resident’s support team. Team members and case managers maintain regular communication with families and caregivers through email, phone, and other appropriate communication platforms, providing updates on progress, goals, and areas of focus. This ongoing partnership helps ensure that the people who know the resident best are informed and involved throughout their stay.

The goal is to help residents develop the practical skills they need to care for themselves, make responsible choices, and participate more independently in daily life.

Daily Living and Independence FAQs

Education is an integral part of the Monarch residential experience. Residents receive educational services through Monarch Residential Education, which is part of the same Monarch educational program and model used at Monarch Day School. This close connection allows educational and residential teams to reinforce goals and strategies throughout the day and across settings. The Monarch Day School, a chartered non-public school licensed by the Ohio Department of Education, is located adjacent to the residential programs,  which allows students to transition seamlessly between their residential and educational environments each day.

An Individualized School Experience

The school year runs for 195 days, from mid-August through mid-July, with a typical school day from 8:25 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. Students learn in small educational teams of approximately five to six students and receive a combination of one-on-one and small-group instruction.

Instruction is aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Service Plan (SP) and supported by Monarch’s Visual Language Immersion Treatment Model. Educational teams include intervention specialists, supervisory teachers, instructional assistants, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, behavior analysts and specialists, registered behavior technicians, and music and art therapists.

Students receive academic instruction, speech and occupational therapy, and other specialized supports designed to help them make meaningful progress toward their individual educational goals and graduation requirements.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Education at Monarch extends beyond academics. Students have opportunities to practice skills in real-world settings through community-based experiences, prevocational training, and social and recreational activities that promote independence, confidence, and connection. For residents of MBA North and South, structured community activities are typically offered at least weekly, when clinically and developmentally appropriate. Residents must be able to maintain an appropriate level of safety in the community in order to participate in community outings. The goal is not simply to visit the community, but to help residents generalize the skills they are learning at Monarch across different people, places, and situations.

Activities are selected based on residents’ interests and goals and may include restaurants, parks, stores, recreational facilities, movies, swimming, and other community destinations.

Experiences may include:

  • Community field trips and outings
  • Prevocational work experiences
  • Cooking clubs
  • Dances, holiday celebrations, spirit weeks, and field day
  • Art and music therapy
  • Opportunities to develop daily living and social skills

Educational technology, including Speech Generating Devices (SGDs), is integrated into instruction when appropriate. Student progress is continually monitored through individualized data collection and assessment, allowing the educational team to understand each student’s progress and adjust instruction and supports as needed.

Monarch Residential Education also serves students from outside northeast Ohio through single-case agreements, allowing families from across the country to access the program when appropriate.

In Their Own Words

“We had a really great experience at Monarch because we saw all the hard work everyone put into making my son successful. The collaboration between teacher, staff, and residential employees was great in that they all made sure we were on the same page. The staff at Monarch were really in tune with my son, and they worked well with the San Francisco United School District to manage his academic, medical, and educational needs. The communication was also positive. Anytime I had a question, the staff were available to me. They exceeded my expectations with parent training and consistent monthly meetings, where I felt they listened to my feedback.”

-Mother of a Former Monarch Resident (California)

“We would definitely recommend Monarch. The residents are well cared for and safe. The campus is beautiful. It’s not a fly-by-night organization because it’s been around for 150 years. You have to be a credible organization to have someone from Harvard (Dr. Howard Shane) consulting. There aren’t many places like this. Our son had some really good case managers, [one of whom] was the perfect mom when I couldn’t be there. There are really talented people at the school, and the school communication was excellent. It was obvious at IEP meetings that all the specialists knew him well, and they wanted us to be part of the process. They definitely prepared him for independence. He is one of the few people at his adult program who communicates well with his Speech Generating Device. We are so glad we made the decision to go to Monarch. We feel so much gratitude and good fortune.”

Dear Monarch Team,

As our student begins the next chapter of their journey, we simply wanted to express our deepest gratitude to each of you for your unwavering commitment to them over the past year and a half. The progress made during their time at Monarch is nothing short of remarkable, and we will be forever grateful for the care, dedication, and expertise your team poured into helping them grow. Through every meeting, it was evident how deeply you knew them, not just as a student, but as an individual. You understood their strengths, challenges, needs, and most importantly, how to support them with compassion, patience, and consistency.

Today’s meeting made something even more apparent, your genuine love and care was reflected in every conversation, every concern, and every hope you shared for their future…We hope you carry the peace of knowing that your team gave our student everything they needed while they were in your care. You did everything right. You believed in them, celebrated their successes, stood beside them through difficult moments, and helped lay the foundation for the progress they have achieved.

Your work has mattered in ways that cannot always be measured. You have changed the trajectory of this student's life, and that is an extraordinary gift. Monarch is so much more than a placement, it is a place that embodies the beauty of personal growth, transformation, resilience, and hope. Thank you for being that place for our student and for so many others.

With sincere gratitude and admiration,
Angela Gardner, Director of Student Services (7-12)
