Last year, Bellefaire JCB’s Jewish Day School counselors were assigned to work with Talia, a kindergarten student at one of the Orthodox Jewish schools who had difficulty socializing with other children. Talia often seemed like she was in her own world and would talk to herself.
During recess and free time she played alone or would wander the playground by herself. Talia also was having toileting accidents during the school day as well as at home.
Bellefaire’s therapist met weekly with Talia to practice social and general communication skills. In addition, the therapist worked with the Talia’s Mother on toileting issues and provided her with the necessary skills to help her daughter interact socially during playdates. It ultimately was felt that Talia would benefit from additional counseling so she was referred to an outpatient therapist at Bellefaire JCB. Both staff members worked closely with Talia and her family, ultimately deciding that it would be best to have Talia repeat Kindergarten.
Bellefaire’s Jewish Day School counselor reports that Talia is managing beautifully this school year. She has friends and is interacting appropriately with them. She does not talk to herself anymore and has stopped having toileting accidents in school. She has graduated from therapy and continues to thrive in both her school and home environment.
